A grape escape to discover mountain Nebbiolo
Valtellina wine tour is a journey in the magic world of the mountain Nebbiolo. Valtellina is located north of Lake Como and it’s the only longitudinal valley of the Italian Alps. On the Retic side of the Adda river wine has been grown up since century, stealing land to the mountains and constructing the widest terraced area in Europe. The grapevine extension is 950 hectares and goes from 300 to 900 meters above sea level. Still nowadays the harvest is done by hand and the wine obtained is the product of great sacrifices and love for this difficult terroir. The main and only grape is Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca. Valtellina wine region is divided into 5 macro areas: Grumello, Sassella, Inferno, Fracia and Valgella
Valtellina wine tour includes the guided visit of two primary producers, with the vinification ambients, the barrel store and the aging rooms, followed by a wine tasting conducted by an house expert. Wines are paired with local cheese and famous Bresaola, a dried beef which is the speciality of the region together with Pizzocheri, a kind of home made Tagliatelle made with black corn and alps cheese and dressed with mountain butter and garlic.
You will be visiting La Gatta and Rainoldi , two of the top producers, or in case of no availability, other top scale producers. Lunch with typical regional food can be organized in a nice Agriturismo surrounded by grapevines.
Brief description of the two wineries:
Completely surrounded by vineyards, Tenuta La Gatta was originally built as a Dominican convent and its emblem is the bell tower of the small church. The Tenuta was then for years the residence of the Gatti family, from which it took its name, and later became the property of the Mascioni family before being taken over by the Triacca family who restored it to its former glory. Visit to the estate begins with a tour of the vineyard among the terraces along the hill’s contours, a pioneering achievement by the Triacca company.

Founded in 1925 by the current owner’s grandfather, the ‘Aldo Rainoldi’ is a historic winery in the Valtellina and it is one of the most reliable wineries in the area, thanks to its ability to express, vintage after vintage, season after season, wines of great personality, always striving for a quality that is anything but taken for granted.
